Have You Decided About the Vaccine?
By Tom Herrin
As the entire world has seemingly been turned upside down by the virus that has invaded it, just about everyone has waited for some kind of sign of help. Whether that is in the form of treatment or vaccine, either one or both would be great. As researchers have been moving with hyper speed, several vaccine candidates have had success. Of course, the first to be offered a vaccine had to be frontline workers. The next in order must likely be the elderly. In the next few months, most of us will be given an opportunity to take it. The decision may be a big one, but the more we prepare for making that choice, the better we will be.
It Could Seem Like a Small Miracle
Vaccines have had assorted kinds of success. The first, smallpox, provided insight into the potential of intervention with a known serious disease. It worked reasonably well and led to more development. The DPT vaccine has been used for some years routinely and prevented some serious illnesses that had once been deadly. The Polio vaccine was another one that changed the world by acting against a disease that was responsible for the poster children for the March of Dimes.
It Could Seem Like a Disaster
While many have benefited by taking vaccines, all vaccines have not been great. Some have caused some bad reactions such as muscle weakness, fever, seizures, memory loss, sleep problems, and the list goes on. Many people fear taking something into their bodies that is foreign. Many of these vaccines from the past were made from live viruses and caused, at least, mild forms of the particular illness. Those who have had, or heard of, some of these experiences may have some reason to fear.
It Is Better to Make a Decision Ahead of Time
Rather than wait until an announcement is made that a vaccine is available to the general public, now is the time to give it some serious thought. With all of the information that is coming forth, there is plenty to review. These vaccines have been pretty well tested, and it may be left for us to use our discretion. Give it some thought so that you may know if your place is at the head of the line or on the side.
