5 Health Concerns of Makeup
By Brandi Goodman
Makeup is used by many as a way to look and feel good. It's also a fun way to express yourself artistically with new colors and patterns that you can easily learn from the ever-growing list of makeup tutorials that are available on every social media platform. However, there are some health concerns with makeup that need to be addressed before you start applying.
You're Damaging Your Skin When You Leave It On
You shouldn't be putting makeup on in the morning and leaving it on all day and night. You need to wash it off your skin so you don't cause any damage to it. It's also wise to apply only a thin layer and not put on a thick coat of it that will smother your skin and not allow it to breathe at all.
You're Using Old Stuff
The older your makeup is, the more likely it is to contain bacteria. Bacteria breeds easily on makeup that's been used frequently. Most experts will say that your makeup supply should be replaced at least every six months. Go longer than this and you're likely to be putting germ-filled products on your face.
You're Not Washing Your Brushes
The same sentiment applies to your brushes. You should never continue to use the same brushes over and over without ever giving them a wash in between. They, too, are a breeding ground for bacteria. If you use a beauty blender or sponge, you should replace it far more often. It's too porous to be washed well.
You Share Your Makeup
It isn't wise to share your makeup with others. It's an easy way to spread infection. Say someone has a cold sore on their lip and you use their lipstick. You're now likely to catch it. Perhaps your friend has a current eye infection and you share shadow or liner. Now you could experience problems with your eye health as well. The better answer is to skip sharing these types of products.
You're Not Applying Sunscreen
Another big problem with makeup is that too many people do not apply any sunscreen first. You're rushing to get your "face on" and forget to put sunscreen on your skin first that will help it stay protected while in the sun. Make sure you apply sunblock first before adding a makeup layer so the sun won't cause any damage.
Health concerns related to makeup can always be avoided. Just be sure you're replacing your items often, never sharing it with anyone, and wiping it all off before bedtime. With these tips in mind, you should be able to use your artistic abilities to create the daily looks you desire without further worries.
