Fall Has Some Health Benefits of its Own
By Tom Herrin
For many people, fall represents a change in the temperature and feel of the air. For others, such as those in southern California, it still means something different, though it may be in the form of seasonal activities. No matter where people are in this country, Halloween still comes in late October. It still represents fall colors and traditional harvest foods. They are the very ones that lead up to great holidays. For others, it becomes the time when college alumni gather and chant and celebrate as their favorite team takes on their longtime rivals. It can all serve as a good time for healthier living.
Play An Outdoor Game
Many people manage to have a renewed enthusiasm for playing something. Many times, it is touch football. Even in its gentlest form, it can provide some opportunities for good physical activity. As a college student, I began playing touch football in a very laid back game on a regular basis with some friends. Before long, I realized my conditioning improved considerably. I made a few minor adjustments to my diet and lost 35 pounds in about three or four months. It was great for my health.
Harvest Something
Picking, or picking up, something can be good regular exercise. For me, picking up pecans required regular attention and can burn a few hundred calories in an hour. Picking fruit can do the same thing. With the reaching, bending, and stretching, people can get some productive physical activity. They can do so pretty regularly if they try to keep up with the ripening of some kind of crop. It is not so much a chore since time passes considerably faster as they fill a bag or bucket with their produce.
Check Out A Farmers Market
If you really have an interest in improving your diet, go look for some fresh grown foods. A farmers market can showcase a large variety of foods that are grown in the area. You can look around and select the ones that appeal to you. Take them home, and find a good new recipe. Choosing one you have never even tried can be a fun challenge. Get someone else to help you as you attempt to make something with ingredients that have tastes you are unfamiliar with. Make this a healthy food and, combined with your activities, you can create a healthier lifestyle.
