Working Shifts Should Not Damage Health

By Tom Herrin

A job is very different to people depending on just what they do and when.  At one time, when America was largely dependent upon farming, most people worked from morning until evening.  It may have been a long day, but most people were exposed to plenty of sunlight.  This provided some valuable vitamins that are essential to good health.  Once the electric light was invented, people looked for ways to use it to make more money.  Many industries began to operate around the clock.  This meant that people would have to work some pretty odd times.  While it may have been good for business, it has not always been so good for health.

Health and Safety May Both Be at Risk

Many times, when people work shifts, they struggle to get good sleep.  The natural rhythm is disrupted by the lack of sunlight as well as trying to sleep during the day.  Fatigue is common among shift workers and may be translated to a greater number of accidents at work and during the drive to and from.  This also may interfere with the body's natural immunity, particularly since the individual may be deprived of adequate natural light.

Create a Buffer

Just because people work shifts does not mean they have to give up on maintaining their own health.  There are still some measures they can take to guard themselves.  Following a few suggestions may be all it takes.  One of those is to take a walk around before the shift begins.  Another is avoid drinking caffeinated drinks once they have gotten very far into their shifts.  This may help them to be able to sleep after the shift is over.  Training employees in ways to deal with shift work is important.  When people can manage their sleep and activity, they will be much better off.

Make the Shift Work for You

Just because you work shifts does not mean you have to live a secluded life.  You still have to find ways to remain involved in family.  It is also necessary to get some exercise.  Making your life as near normal as possible can be a way to stay on track.  Remembering to make health a priority is critical.  It is every bit as important for those who work shifts as it is for those who work regular schedules.  I have worked some odd times and ended up riding my bicycle at midnight to continue to exercise.  I always feel that it paid off.
