Exercising Without Injury Can Be Motivation

By Tom Herrin

The intent of any kind of self-improvement plan should be to do just that.  Making the effort to improve overall health is an ongoing process for many.  There is really never a point in which a person has arrived, so to speak.  As a part of this effort, its critical for people to protect themselves as much as possible.  Avoiding injury can be a vital part of this protection.  With a little effort to be more aware, it is possible for anyone to develop good strategies that may help to avoid injuries and make any program of physical activity more successful.

Start at the Right Pace

Anytime someone begins a new program, it may be best to take it as slow as possible.  It is always easy to pick it up once it has begun.  Trying to establish a starting point that is manageable is important.  When people begin too hard or too heavy, they risk becoming injured in the process.  Overtaxing the body is a sure way to become discouraged quickly.  When a person takes it slow, they are likely to know when it is time to increase intensity.  Doing this at a good pace can help them to feel that they are on the right to making the kind of progress they desire.

Be Mindful of the Surroundings

Having a good sense of the temperature and humidity can go a long way toward making a workout actually do what it is intended to do.  Dressing accordingly is a major part of achieving the desired goal.  If they are over- or under-dressed, the results may be unfavorable.  Suffering from some kind of heat exhaustion or getting frostbite either one will likely deter any additional motivation.  Once people become unmotivated due to a bad experience, it is often very difficult to turn that around because it is a negative thought in their mind.

Activity Must Support a Good Outlook

If we are to do something positive for our health, we must make it work in the right way.  Avoiding injuries is generally simple and vital to our success.  I have made plenty of mistakes with working out and suffered the consequences.  It can be really discouraging and defeat the purpose entirely.  Once I have put better practices in place, I have been much more successful and been able to enjoy the entire process.
