A Pet May Make a Positive Contribution to Health

By Tom Herrin

As young children, many of us may have had some kind of a pet.  It often seems the furry kind are more lovable.  They are something we can cuddle and feel a sense of emotions for.  When I was young, we always had dogs.  We normally had anywhere between two and six or so.  For the most part, they were fun to have.  I simply thought of them as a playmate and nothing else.  Apparently they may be much more.  In some cases, they may have quite an impact on our health, and this can be in some really good ways.

There May Be a Hormone Connection

Our bodies rely on hormones to help us to function at our best.  Cortisol is a hormone that apparently helps us to have the ability to protect ourselves.  When we are under stress, levels of this are higher.  The bad part is that we may end up feeling stressed too often and have health issues.  It seems that having a pet may help to reduce the levels of this hormone.  Somewhat opposite of this is oxytocin.  It is a hormone that helps to make us feel good.  Having a pet is believed to help us to have more of this.  The combination can be a good one.

We All Need Some Exercise

Even though we know we should get some kind of regular exercise, many of us struggle to develop a regular routine of it.  We may find it too mundane.  Most pets require some kind of exercise in order to keep them healthy.  As we become involved in a routine of exercising our pet, we will have to do a little more exercise ourselves.  Once we get into this habit, we may find it much more enjoyable and seek to do more.  In most cases, a little exercise is much better than none at all.

We All Need Some Kind of Friend

One thing about pets is that they are pretty dependent upon us.  This can give us a sense of responsibility as we care for them.  They can lift our spirits as they greet us every day.  They also tend to be grateful for any attention we give them.  Even if we think we enjoy being alone, a pet can fill a pretty big void in our lives.
