Put Anxiety In Its Place
By Sandy Schroeder
In a chaotic world it is not surprising when anxiety keeps showing up. If you wake up in the morning feeling stressed and anxious, it may be time to establish a comforting routine to put anxiety in its place. Anxiety can affect health and cloud the day. Putting it in its place is crucial.
Create a New Approach
Health experts advise establishing a comfortable pattern that lowers stress and provides reassurance. Gradually, as you build confidence in yourself and your world, you may find yourself waking up to a calmer place. It won't happen overnight, but there are simple steps that can help you feel calmer as you get a grip on worry.
Exercise in place - Before you get out of bed, try doing a few simple stretching exercises that relax the muscles and clear your head. Gentle motion that keeps you limber can be a positive way to begin the day.
Breathe deeply and let go - Use your favorite breath exercises to encourage relaxation. As you inhale and exhale, let the tension go. Feel your muscles and your mind relax with each breath.
Take a short walk outside - Walk your dog, walk to the park or around the block. Familiar steps remind us of who we are and where we want to be. By the time you return you may be eager to start the day.
Read something that inspires you - Keep favorite quotes on hand that make you smile and give you hope. Jot down new thoughts, ideas or questions. Be open to the day.
Accept your thoughts - Consider what your worries and anxieties are and then move on to the day, letting them take a backseat to your schedule reviewing what you need and want to get done. Worries may still be there, but they do not have to dominate your day.
If setting new patterns help you get a grip on your anxieties, keep using them to reduce anxiety. If you are still having persistent worries and anxiety, ask your doctor for a referral to see a therapist to work through the issues.
