Tips to Help You when You're Overwhelmed

By Rebecca Waldron

We all get overwhelmed by the demands of work, family, bills and worry. Sometimes it gets so bad that your focus and drive seems to take a backseat to all else. In these instances, it’s wise to take a break and look at what’s making you the most overwhelmed and come at it with a new plan.

Brainstorm

Stop all the “busy work” and take as much time as you need to gather your thoughts. Then, take out a piece of paper and write all the duties and responsibilities that you have in a list. Think of ways that you can tackle these in a new or different angle. Sometimes just a shift in the realm of your thoughts is all that is needed. Do you feel overwhelmed because you’re afraid of failure? Are there not enough hours in your day for everything? These are common reasons why people feel overwhelmed and powerless. However, these are only emotions and they cannot kill you. Understand that. In that case, there is always a way to beat the odds with a little logic backing you up.

Delegate

Are you responsible for too much when there are many sets of capable hands in your household? Get everyone together for a family meeting. Tell them that you are feeling overwhelmed and need help. This is your family and they love you, so don’t be afraid to ask for their assistance. Have the kids do the dishes and make supper once in a while. Ask your spouse to tackle the bills every other month. Create a harmonious lifestyle in your home that will bring joy to everyone and allow for you to find some relief. This also applies at work. If you need to obtain help on projects, don’t be afraid to ask your support team or manager. It takes a little bravery once, and the solution could be right around the corner.

Prioritize

Another way to help you stop feeling so overwhelmed is to prioritize your duties. What’s most important and must be done every day? Make those first on the list. Then, spread the other responsibilities out through the remainder of the week. If you know what your schedule is going to be like every day, it will help you to feel more in control of your situation.

Relax

Take some time out for yourself. Go for a sunset walk. Play your favorite sport outside with your family. Sit and binge watch television for a day. Take a bubble bath. There is a plethora of ways to just kick your feet up and rest. You work hard. You deserve it.
