Neck Pain: A Symptom or the Cause?

By Sara Butler

When people feel pain in their neck, the first instinct they may have is to think that there's something wrong with the neck! The chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic know that many times, the pain felt in the neck is merely a symptom of a problem occurring somewhere else. Neck pain is common, but it's important to understand what is causing the pain so it can be treated. Here are a few things you need to know!

Gradual Causes

Neck pain can come on gradually as the result of a problem somewhere else in the body. The biggest reasons behind gradual neck pain include:

  • Poor ergonomics - If you sit at a desk to work for several hours per day, you should change position frequently. Not changing position can cause problems in the upper back, shoulders, and arms, all of which can eventually lead to neck pain.
  • Carrying a heavy bag - Pressure placed on just one side of your body can throw your body off balance, which means muscles throughout your body must shift to keep you upright. This can lead to muscle imbalances that then result in neck pain.
  • Stress - Stress can have a huge impact on your health, causing muscle tension or resulting in not getting enough sleep. Eventually, stress can start to impact you physically, causing pain.

How Your Neck is Impacted

Your nervous system connects your brain to every single part of your body. If there's a joint restriction or dysfunction present somewhere along the nerve pathway, then it can cause inflammation and pain, pain often felt in someplace other than where the problem originated. This is called referred pain, and your chiropractor's job is to discover what is causing the pain and treat it, not simply to treat your symptoms.

If you have an issue with neck pain, then you may also notice problems with carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, headaches, and golfer's arm. Remember, symptoms take a while to pop up, so make sure to let your chiropractor know every symptom you're experiencing, even if you think it has nothing to do with your neck. Even issues such as problems concentrating, dizziness, and sinus problems can help your chiropractor to uncover the underlying issue.

Neck pain is a common issue, but that doesn't mean you should ignore it. If you suffer from neck pain, then come into The Joint to discuss it with a chiropractor today!
