Celebrate These December Observances in Healthy Ways
By Brandi Goodman
December is filled with observances. Many of them may have the opposite effect of being healthy, especially if you're overeating because of them. Find healthy ways to observe the occasions and enjoy your time without turning to unhealthy habits.
Christmas
Christmas is the biggest observance of all during the month of December. Though not everyone celebrates, many people do in some form. Instead of stuffing yourself with sugary treats and overindulging at any holiday parties you attend, you should find healthier ways to celebrate. Create your own healthy snacks instead of purchasing store-bought options. Make sure you eat a healthy meal before you attend any holiday get-together so you're less likely to overeat there. Also, don't forget to add in some exercise to your winter season.
National Eggnog Day
Eggnog is a common holiday drink. Buy most versions from the store, though, and you'll find far more calories than you need from one beverage. The fat and sugar content tends to reach the high side as well. Create your own version at home instead to lower the calorie count and fat content. You can also check a health food store and find an almond milk or oat milk version that's a more nutritious alternative.
New Year's Eve
On the final day of the month, New Year's Eve arrives. Many mark the occasion by staying up until midnight to usher in the new year. It's often followed up with alcohol. Skip the adult celebration and celebrate at a normal time instead. You don't have to wait up for the final minutes. Celebrate around 9 and you can still get the adequate rest you need to make it through the first day of the year with ease. Skip the adult beverages as well, instead opting for a sparkling cider -- or better yet, some water infused with fruit and herbs for a real kick that packs the benefits.
Safe Toys and Gifts Month
December is also Safe Toys and Gifts Month. Rather than gifting children with the most popular toys, or the most affordable finds, make sure you're giving safe and healthy gifts that can be worth their while. Give fitness-related options, such as a bike, jump rope, hanging swing, punching bag, or something similar. For younger kids, find learning toys.
There are always healthy ways to celebrate any occasion. You just have to make a few changes to your typical plans so you're engaging in healthy behaviors. Poor coping mechanisms and a bad diet can quickly lead to further troubles.
