3 Tips for Beating Late Night Hunger

By Genevieve Cunningham

Late night snacking. There's something about grabbing a midnight snack that just feels so satisfying. It's like we're getting away with something, or maybe it feels like a security or comfort of some sort. Unfortunately, most cases of late night snacking aren't good for your health. So what are you supposed to do if this is a habit that you already keep? If you get a little hungry late at night, take a look at these tips to beat the hunger and boost your health.

Drink Something Satisfying

If that familiar hunger pang or craving hits you after you've committed to giving up the late night snacks, reach for a satisfying drink instead. A cup of green tea, a sleepy time blend, or even some warm lemon water can help fill your stomach and satisfy the craving. Most of these kinds of drinks contain very little, or sometimes zero, calories. Transform your food habit into a healthy drink habit, and you'll be halfway there.

Eat a Filling Dinner

If you really do get hungry at night, try eating a more filling dinner. Make sure that your last meal of the day contains plenty of fiber-filled foods -- think beans, cruciferous veggies, etc. -- and make sure you fill up on water at dinner as well. This combination will keep your stomach full and satisfied for a much longer period of time.

Go to Bed

Seriously … just go to sleep! People who midnight snack tend to be people who stay up late, and that’s not always a good thing. It's hard to turn around a bad habit, but if you're already giving up late night snacking, why not give up the staying up late as well? Try adjusting your entire schedule. Go to bed earlier and wake up earlier. Taking this approach helps you give up two bad habits at one time for a healthier life and happier you.

Who doesn't love a good late night snack? We all do! It feels so good to grab a snack, watch some Netflix, and just chill out. But giving into this craving can ruin your diet, cause weight gain, and harm your health. It’s just not a good habit to keep on a daily basis. Use these tips to beat that hungry feeling, and you may be able to beat the hunger and the habit all at once.
