How to Snack Without Weight Gain

By Genevieve Cunningham

Who doesn't love a good snack? We learn to snack when we're young. We get home from school, grab a snack, and watch our favorite cartoons. Sound familiar? As we get older, we often take our snacking habits with us. Unfortunately, if we're not snacking the right way, it can really hinder our health. More specifically, it can cause unwanted weight gain. If you're interested in keeping your snacking habit but dropping the extra weight, take a look at these tips to get that snacking under control.

Schedule Your Snacks

For some people, a schedule is the only way to keep things under control. They thrive with routine! When you only snack at certain times of the day, it makes it easier to resist the in-between moments. You'll be less likely to grab a bag of chips or a candy bar, especially if it's only an hour or two before your neck scheduled snack.

Choose Wisely

Snacking isn't so bad if we choose the right foods. Sweet snacks and sodas and potato chips probably aren't the best choices. But if you choose fruit, veggies, nuts, or other healthy foods, then snacking probably won't hurt much. If you currently snack on unhealthy foods, it can be hard to make the switch, but it's worth it! Start slow, make changes, and your diet will be on point before you know it.

Snack on Purpose

Some people don't like to snack. Once they start, they have a hard time stopping. And endless snacking is certainly not good for weight loss. If this is you, don't snack unless there's a purpose for snacking. Late night? Grab a snack. Hard workout? Grab a snack. If something about your normal schedule is off, and you're feeling particularly hungry or shaky, just grab a snack. When you snack on purpose, it cuts out mindless eating but still offers the benefit of a quick bite when it's needed.

You can still snack without completely harming your health. And that's a good thing because snacking feels so good! If you do it the right way, you get the best of both world: a satisfying snack and a healthy diet! Use these tips to snack the right way, and enjoy good health and a fit body for years to come.
