Aging Should Mean Not Giving Up

By Tom Herrin

At one time, many people seemed to accept that fact that they were getting older and able to do less.  In recent years the terms like "50 is the new 30" have caught on.  It may not be simply that anything new has been invented but that more people have taken another look at how they live their lives.  When people are able to be productive, they feel better about themselves.  If they can find ways to make a contribution, they may have a better self-image as well as strengthen their relationships with others.  Crafting is one of those things that has made a relative comeback in popularity.  It can have a great effect of someone’s ability to maintain a good mind, staving off some of the age-related problems such as dementia.

Crafting May Provide Defense

When people create with their hands, they must use a considerable amount of analytical thinking to determine how they will create.  The skills involving the use of the hands require enough mental work to keep the brain active.  Anytime the brain has a lot of activity, it seems to build up its ability to prevent dementia.  It is believed that this kind of activity can have a positive impact that may last for several years in protecting the brain.

Crafting May Help Combat Depression

A large number of people today are affected by depression.  Whether it is due to work, school, family, finances, or the immense flow of information people deal with everyday, they often become overwhelmed with all of it.  The result is a sinking in emotions that can be detrimental to people’s health.  Crafting can occupy the hands and mind, resulting in a pretty effective means of shutting out all other distractions for a while.  It also can help provide a feeling of joy and confidence, both of which can go a long way toward combating depression.

Browse and Choose

If you feel like you would be interested in giving crafting a try, there are several things you can do.  There are all kinds of stores, fairs, and magazines that feature various examples of crafts.  Selecting something to try is a simple start.  You can purchase kits or supplies that can get you started.  After you see a final product, you will be sure to want to improve your skills.  You may be able to do this with classes, groups, or simply sharing ideas with others.  Working with your hands to create can be a great way to preserve mental health and maintain great productivity as you age.
