An Apple Today Can Mean Continued Good Health

By Tom Herrin

When it comes to one of the oldest of snack foods, apples may have the rest of them beat.  They have been packed in lunches for what may seem like forever. How many times do people grab an apple on the way out the door to just about anywhere?  They are not a food that necessarily has to have any kind of special storage or refrigeration, but the best part is that they are a really healthy food that can fit into just about any diet and can be eaten in all kinds of ways.

They Are Great for Digestion

Apples are high in fiber with a large water content.  Both of these things make the process of digestion go much better.  They add bulk to the food, making it pass through the digestive system more smoothly.  Many times, when people are hungry, they are in need of water. This higher water content can help to satisfy that.  This makes apples a great food to have when people are trying to cut calories. Another thing is that it seems that they can boost metabolism.  It is believed that when apples are eaten before other foods, either the calories will not be absorbed or they will be burned faster.

They May Help Fight Cancer

The fiber mentioned has been thought by many to be one of the the things that can deter colon cancer.  There may be other reasons as well. It is also believed to help against breast cancer. Maybe more amazingly is that they are thought to be useful in combating lung cancer.  They seem to be able go reduce the cancer and/or slow the spread. That old saying about an apple a day keeping the doctor away may have more truth to it than many may think.

They Seem to Help Control Blood Sugar

Apples appear to be able to somehow slow the the way the body takes in and uses carbohydrates.  They also affect the insulin receptors. With the number of instances of type 2 diabetes in this country today, anything that may help could be well worth adding to the diet.  It happens that there are more than 7,500 varieties of apples. They come in a variety of colors and flavors. They have all kinds of uses. I like to eat them sliced with peanut butter, honey, and uncooked oats.  They are also great in salads. If you haven’t been buying them lately, pick some up and let your family see what they can do to find creative ways to eat them.
