Stock Your Diet with Fish for Better Health

By Tom Herrin

It doesn't require large amounts of any food to make a diet healthier.  Many times, some small servings on a regular basis can have a sizable impact on health.  One of those foods that is known to make quite a difference in several areas of health is fish.  Some cultures have it as a major part of their diet.  It is believed that this is a big reason why some of them appear to be relatively free from several health problems.  For many people, having fish regularly as part of their diets can support good overall health.

It Has a Lot of Nutrients

The nutrient content of food varies widely.  Not all people are fully aware of just how much is in any given thing.  Even for label readers, it is difficult to know exactly what is in each food.  If they want to increase the nutrient content of their diets, a good food to add is fish.  It has iodine, minerals, and vitamins.  It is generally high in protein.  The fatty kinds of fish are especially high in omega-3 fatty acids.  They are known to have a really good impact on health.

It May Help Protect Brain Function

Preservation of mental capacities is something that many people are concerned about today.  Eating fish regularly seems to have some positive effects on the brain and its grey matter.  With grey matter being so critical for things such as memory, processing information, and emotions, protecting it is a high priority.  People with problems such as Alzheimer's show a significant shrinking of grey matter while studies on people who eat fish regularly show a greater amount of grey matter in some of the centers of the brain.

It May Help Supply Vitamin D

Adults tend to have too little Vitamin D.  As a matter of fact, it is believed that over 40 percent of them are deficient in it.  Fish are known to be one of the foods with plenty of this vitamin.  Many people get it from the sun.  For those who cannot get enough sun, fish is a good way to make it up.  Poor sleep is one of the things thought to be a result of inadequate amounts of this vitamin.  With all of the things that can be attributed to fish, adding it to a diet can be a worthwhile thing to try.  We eat quite a bit.  As a backup, I try to keep a few cans of sardines, tuna, or salmon around for a quick snack or meal.
