We Are Always Stronger Together

By Tom Herrin

As the new has begun to wear off of the life that so many people have been thrust into living, trying times have also shown up for many.  It is not that times were not trying enough with so many constraints and new practices for so many to follow, but many have begun to lose their tolerance of others that was temporarily there as fear gripped them.  It is unfortunate that many people have become dulled to the idea that thousands of deaths reported almost seem commonplace.  As they continue to be guarded with their time and spend more together, it may be a prime time to make their relationships stronger.  The same may happen with their physical health.

Talk Together

Too many people have developed habits of being together and apart at the same time.  Occupying more of a mutual space may be a chance to change that.  Playing some games they haven't seen in years can be fun.  Since many have less time demands, they may be able to play for longer periods of time.  This lends itself to better discussion.  Talking as they play is a natural.  Other games involving acting things out can be fun, and many prefer working puzzles.  How many times have people lost track of time doing this?

Get Physical

There is no excuse to give up on exercise just because so many things are different.  Having a little group activity may get everyone involved.  Especially if there are smaller children, allowing each to take turns leading can get them more motivated.  It is not so bad to have a few creative things to break the monotony here as well.  If it becomes a family tradition, then everyone has won in this time of so much difficulty.

Sharing Is a Pleasure

One of the things we have always tried to do as a family is spend a little time together talking around the table after a meal.  As we do this, I have found that it is a great time for me to do more listening and less talking.  It allows each member to make a contribution without feeling that they are having to listen to a lecture.  I feel that we grow stronger as a group.  If we can all take some good things away from this, we may have done more than simply survive.  We will have thrived.
