Can't Get Outside? 2 Tips That Still Bring Benefits
By Genevieve Cunningham
It's a fairly well known fact that spending time in nature is good for our overall well-being. We've been told that we should get outdoors for walks and play time and just general time in the fresh air and sunshine. A lot of times, we try to follow this advice. We have outdoor get-togethers and go on hikes and lounge on patios. And most would admit that it does, in fact, make us feel better to get outside. But what happens when we just can't? When we work from dark to dark or when we have so many obligations that there just isn't any time? While nothing beats getting into the real outdoors, there are some things we can do to help bring the benefits into our lives even when we're stuck indoors. If you find yourself stuck inside, take a look at these two important ways to bring outdoor benefits to your indoor life.
Find Some Beautiful Images
Seeing images of nature can help calm the nerves almost as if you were standing there yourself. It won't have quite the same effect, but many really feel a difference in the amount of stress they feel and their overall feelings of angst. All you need is a wide range of images that make you feel at peace. For some, it might be images of the beach. For others, it might be a forest. And for others, it might be a combination of multiple different kind of images. Save them on your computer or make a slideshow, and pull them out for a look when you're feeling overwhelmed and can't get outside. You won't smell the earth or feel the breeze, but the images can absolutely keep your mind at ease until you have the time to get outside.
Listen to Nature Sounds
The sounds of nature have an effect on stress, our mental health, and even our energy. Listening to the sounds of nature can be incredibly soothing. You can download nature sounds from a wide variety of online sources and then play them when you need it. You may consider the sound of a thunderstorm or rain, birds chirping in the morning, or waves crashing on the shore. Experiment. See what works best for you. Play these soothing sounds when you really need to get outside but regular life prevents it.
Getting in nature is so important. We need the sun and the smell and the calming sensation that comes with nature. But life doesn't always allow us the time to get outside and get a breath of fresh air. When you need the feel of nature but can't find the time, use these tips to bring the benefits into your life until you can find the time again.
