Why a Technology Break Is So Important

By Genevieve Cunningham

We're a society that is highly dependent on technology. We use it every day, all day long. We use it at work, for play, and even carry it in our pockets. But let's be real: As much as we love the convenience that it brings to our lives, we definitely need regular breaks from constant technology. If you're like most people, you're aware of the need for a break, but it's just so hard to make it happen. Why is it such a big deal anyway? If you love technology and are hesitant to take a break, take a look at why it's so important to give yourself a break every once in a while.

Physical Health Problems

Excessive technology use can lead to multiple physical health problems. Some of the most common include eye strain, back and neck pain, and joint discomfort. It can also lead to a sedentary lifestyle, which brings an entirely new host of health issues. If we take a break from the screen, we give our bodies a rest. We have more time to move and stretch. We have fewer issues with our eyes and with our joints. If you've noticed any of these ailments creeping up in your life, take a little break to begin the process of feeling better.

Mental Health Problems

Along with physical health problems, too much technology can easily lead to mental health issues. This is increased by the amount of time we spend on social media. We compare our lives to others and spend too much time wishing our lives were different. It's stressful and raises concerns over long-term mental wellness. If you want to stay mentally well, you have to get off of the internet and into your real life on a regular basis.

Anchors in Real Life

It's so easy to get wrapped up in an online life. Instead of counting our real friends, we count our online friends. Instead of worrying about the good we're doing in the world, we rely on likes for our self-esteem. Taking frequent and regular breaks from the online world helps us anchor ourselves into real life. It reminds us that real life is happening all around us instead of on our phones or computers. And keeping this reminder in our lives is important for our long-term health and happiness.

It's OK to use and even to enjoy technology. We need it in our everyday lives. But it's so important to take breaks and get some distance from technology. Take a break, get some perspective, and you may notice an improvement in your health and wellness like never before.
