Regular Vacations May Be a Lifesaver
By Tom Herrin
When people think about the things that may be life-changing, they usually have in mind lifestyle in general. It may be finally changing those eating habits, or it may be starting that real exercise program that they always knew they needed but continually put off. Many are probably unaware that one of the things that can make the most difference may be one they are thinking they should consider passing over. Taking a regular vacation may be every bit as important as those other things mentioned. LIfe needs to be a balance. If people don’t have the right kind of it, their health could suffer. A vacation may be the missing element in the lives of many.
They May Offer Protection for the Heart
Studies have had some interesting results regarding vacations and the heart. One showed that men who take regular vacations are 32 percent less likely to die of a heart attack and 21 percent less likely to die of anything that is not age-related than those who don’t. Another study has shown that women who skipped vacations for several years were far more likely to develop heart problems than those who took them two times per year.
They May Help People Sleep Better
Many people sleep well on a vacation, but studies have shown that there may be more than that to it. Those who take vacations may have lasting results long after their vacation is over. One study indicated that people may be able to sleep successfully as much as one hour longer. With the number of people who have sleep problems today, this may be pretty significant.
It Is a Known Way to Reduce Stress
Most of us think about taking a vacation and reducing stress in the same frame of thought. There may be more to it than that. A vacation may be able to reduce depression as well. When people can reduce both of these things, they are likely to be better workers. They may also be better at solving problems, including those that happen in families. There is no reason to despair because you feel that you can’t take an elaborate vacation. Too many people try to wait to take that once in a lifetime trip. All those little ones may do far more good. Do something. Take some time and go camping in a tent, or spend some time at an amusement park with the family. It may be one of the greatest investments of your life.
