When Time Is Scarce, Work Out While Sitting

By Tom Herrin

As busy as life is, people seem to always be in a crunch to make the best use of time.  Working out is easy and hard at the same time.  No matter how much people may want to do it, they often end up either too tired or too limited on time.  For those who work in jobs in which they are able to move around and stay busy, the duties of the job help with activity.  For those who sit in a chair all day as they work, the body tends to get pretty stiff.  They may need exercise more than anyone else but have a hard time getting to it.  Hope is on the way in the form of exercising while sitting in that chair.  If planned right, it can be really productive.

It May Allow Strengthening the Hands

While people who sit as they work may have a lot of finger movement, they often fail to get much in the way of working hand strength.  There are some simple remedies for that.  One easy exercise is to make a tight fist, either holding something in it or not.  Holding it tightly for about five seconds then releasing and spreading the fingers wide can serve as one rep.  Doing this at least five times can provide a small bit of exercise.  Making certain to do this with each hand can help to develop both hands.  It can be surprising just how much something like this can help.

It May Help Work the Core

Many people talk about working the core these days.  Having a stronger core can help support lots of other things, but it is often difficult to work it out.  Easy exercises may be the best.  For those who work in desk jobs, sitting up straight and grabbing the desk is the starting point.  Using this as a base, turning as far as possible from one side to the other using only the core can serve as one rep.  Doing 10 to 15 reps is considered to be sufficient.

It May Surprise You

Some of these small activities may do the most good.  Most of us are guilty of thinking that we have to go all out for progress.  This is not always so.  Many of these low-key exercises can produce good results.  I have done some and been generally pleased with the outcome.  You can make up almost anything you want to work whatever target area you need.  The main thing is that you are making good use of a few minutes of time while at work to exercise.  It may make you more productive on the job as well.
