Will You Flip a Coin on a Vaccine?

By Tom Herrin

With all that the world has been through in the past year, the prospect of finally having a vaccine available has become a reality.  Those on the frontline are now being offered the opportunity to take a vaccine for a virus that has wreaked havoc.  At this point, even if there are delays of one kind or another, vaccines for this virus are about to become a way of life.  For each of us, there will be important choices to make for us and our families.  The better we prepare to make a good decision, the greater peace of mind we may have when the time arrives to do so.  It is one of those things that will be well worth the time and effort.

Heads It's Take One

Vaccines have very mixed reviews and histories.  On the bright side, they have literally changed society.  That first vaccine against smallpox helped to eliminate a disease that had threatened civilization for ages.  Its success overall was nothing short of miraculous.  Other vaccines have followed with similar impact.  The DPT vaccine that has been given for years to young children has been pretty much a standard.  The vaccine for polio was a game-changer in the middle of the twentieth century.  Today's technology has enabled the production of vaccines to be even more successful.

Tails It's Pass

Some vaccines have caused some serious reservations.  Those that may have contained the actual virus, whether live or dead, have seemingly caused some people to have cases of the virus.  At least, many have felt this has happened with flu vaccines.  Some have had problems due to their own immune system and its makeup.  Some reactions have been more than a little unpleasant.  A few of these reactions have been soreness, fever, muscle weakness, impairment of senses, and seizures.

Use Knowledge and Wisdom

For those who may have been members of the FFA when they were younger, they may recall that their advisor always gave advice based on knowledge and wisdom.  It is an important concept.  We need to do the best we can to prepare ourselves now so that we can make a better decision when the time comes.  At the current rate of progress, we may be faced with that decision of whether or not to take the vaccine in the spring.  It could be one of the most critical decisions we will make.  Let it be a good one.
