You Could Be Worrying About the Wrong Fat
By Tom Herrin
Fat is a concern for a lot of us. We generally don't quite like what we see in the mirror because it may not measure up to the image we have in our minds. As a result, we believe we are fat when we may not be, or we may get so accustomed to seeing excess weight on us that we accept it. Either way, body fat may be a problem, but a lot of the time, we fail to understand just how we are affected by fat. It can serve some good purposes as well as all of the bad we may think of.
Some Is Really Bad
One of the worst kinds of fat that is commonly seen is belly fat. It is a kind of visceral fat that tends to accumulate around our middle. At one time, many people saw it as a result of some kind of food they ate or some particular habits. The truth is that this kind of fat is a sign of a possibly serious problem. This kind of fat seems to have association with higher instances of stroke, heart disease, arterial disease, and some cancers. Ignoring can leave any of us vulnerable. We need to aggressively address it by making the necessary changes in diet, exercise, and lifestyle in general. Doing so may be a life-saving move.
Some Fat Is Pretty Good
Our bodies require some kinds of fat in order for everything to work as it should. Our brains must have some fat. If they don't have it, they may risk some big problems with underdevelopment. We also need fat to help to regulate body temperature, store vitamins, balance hormones and blood sugar and a few other things. Knowing the foods with the kinds of fats that support our health is important. From there we have to be able to make informed decisions.
Measuring Body Fat May Help
In today's world, we have some way of measuring everything. Body fat is no different. It is possible to get a general idea of body fat by using any of several available BMI scales. These are body mass indicators, and they use information we provide to assess what kind of shape we are in as far as fat to muscle ratios are concerned. They are easy to use and can be a fairly good guide.
