How to Wake Without Pain

By Brandi Goodman

Waking up in the morning with a stiff or sore body is quite common. Too many people have the wrong mattress, wrong pillow, and poor sleeping habits that make waking without pain difficult. With a few tips in mind, you can better manage your pain from sleeping and get a better night's rest.

Get the Right Mattress

The goal isn't simply to get a new mattress. You should be changing yours every eight years or so, but not every style will be right for you. Each person needs to carefully consider the mattress they're getting to make sure it's the right one for them. You might require a firm mattress if you need extra support for your back. Perhaps a softer mattress with memory foam is in order if something too stiff is uncomfortable for you.

Find a Chiropractic Pillow

Both a lumpy and flat pillow can have repercussions for your neck and shoulders. You should find a chiropractic pillow rather than the basic options from the store if you really want to wake without discomfort. This type offers a special support spot for the neck that keeps your head in position and your spine aligned. Your head can't turn to one side, allowing you to wake up with a kink.

De-Stress Before Bed

Maybe the problem isn't your mattress or pillow at all. You might be holding tension in your body that results in morning time pain if you go to bed feeling stressed. It's important to de-stress before bedtime so your body is relaxed and able to recuperate properly overnight. Spend time reading. Take a warm bath. Set a diffuser with lavender essential oil. Write in a journal. There's lots of ways to eliminate stress at night before you try to hit the hay.

Stretch Before Getting Out of Bed

Too many people jump right out of bed in the morning without giving their bodies the proper chance to wake up. You should stay in bed upon waking and do a few stretches to help prepare your joints for the activity you're about to do. Sit up slowly and reach your arms in the air. Wiggle your toes and outstretch your legs. Lean forward and touch your toes to stretch out your legs and spine. These stretches may help you get up easier without feeling achy and stiff.

Make a few changes to your sleeping routine and the mattress or pillow you sleep on and you should experience better sleep. Waking without pain shouldn't be the norm. With the right tips in mind, you should start waking up feeling refreshed and ready for the day.
