Summer Health Swaps Ideal for Mental Health

By Brandi Goodman

Mental health is typically on an upswing during the summer months. The sun is shining regularly. The weather is nice enough to get outdoors. You're no longer stuck in the house like you may have been throughout the winter and into spring. However, that doesn't mean some people still don't struggle. Some summer health swaps will be ideal for bettering your mental health when you're at a low. These few changes can make a big difference in how you're feeling.

Swap 1: TV Inside for Books Outside

If you find yourself sitting on the couch for hours watching television, it may be time to get up and grab a book instead. Sure, binge-watching your favorite show could help you relieve some stress and get away from the world for a while, but sitting down watching TV for too long can lead to other health problems. You may find yourself gaining weight, eating unhealthy snacks, and staying up later than you should. This can all lead to feelings of guilt, embarrassment, and a decline in mental health. Swap TV time inside for some books outside for a positive change. Reading is good for your brain and being outdoors is ideal for your mental well-being.

Swap 2: Indoor Exercise for Outdoor Exercise

Exercise provides a release of endorphins that can make you feel good. It's beneficial for your mental well-being. Doing the same routine indoors, however, can start to make you feel like you're in a rut. Swap out indoor exercise for some outdoor choices and you may find yourself more relaxed and better able to continue with your workouts. Taking a walk through nature is a great option that can help to ease your mind while still getting you in shape.

Swap 3: Burger Buns for Lettuce Wraps

The food you eat can play a big role in your mental well-being. If you frequently find yourself bingeing on unhealthy foods or overeating, you can start to feel upset with yourself, guilty, and you'll likely never be the weight you want. This can negatively impact your mindset. Make some simple swaps when you're barbecuing with friends, eating out, or just at home alone. If you're enjoying a backyard barbecue, for example, swap out the burger bun for a lettuce wrap. You'll still get to enjoy a juicy burger without having to take in the calories of the bread. Eating an extra slice of watermelon is also more ideal than taking a hefty scoop of potato salad.

Some simple swaps may be all it takes to get your mental health back on track. Make some changes to your summer routine and you might find yourself feeling better than ever. If you still struggle with negative thoughts, low self-esteem, and worse, don't be afraid to reach out for help.
