How to Prevent Back Pain in the Bleachers
By Brandi Goodman
Once school is back in session, the fall sports season often commences. If you're a parent, family member, or friend of a football player, cheerleader, or other sports player for the year, you're bound to spend hours in the bleachers. Bleachers really should get a makeover to make them more comfortable for people to be in. With some tips in mind, however, you can prevent back pain in the bleachers that would otherwise have you struggling to stand after.
Buy a Stadium Seat
Stadium seats are ideal because they offer a back support. Most bleachers only consist of a bottom bench to sit on -- with nothing behind you to hold you up or help keep your back straight. Buy a portable stadium seat that you can fold open when you need to sit and fold closed when you're ready to take it home.
Bring Your Own Chair
If the venue allows, bring your own chair. This is typically an option at football games and for other sports held outdoors. You don't have to sit in the provided bleachers for the duration of the game. Instead, find a spot nearby in the grass and set up a camping chair that allows you to sit supported and feel comfortable.
Get Up to Stretch Often
No matter where you're sitting, it's important that you get up to stretch often. Sitting in even the most comfortable chair is still bad for your body after some time. You need movement to keep the blood flowing and the joints limber. Sitting for an extended time will leave you stiff and sore. Get up every so often and take a walk while stretching out your body so you don't suffer.
Exhibit Good Posture
If you do get stuck sitting in the bleachers sans back support, be sure to exhibit good posture. Sitting up straight with your abdominal muscles engaged and your shoulders back can help you keep your spine from struggling. It's often when we sit slouched, have our legs bent at a funny angle, or have our weight pushed to one side when we feel the pain.
Week after week of sitting in the bleachers can get bothersome quickly. Do what you can to make the experience more comfortable and beneficial for your body. A change in seating and regular stretching can go a long way toward helping you enjoy the experience more so you can watch your kid, grandchild, friend, or neighbor play without worrying about your own health.
