How to Put a Better Spin on Sitting

By Sandy Schroeder

Let’s face it. Many of us generate incomes on our keyboards, or in related activities at our desks, and much of that work is done sitting down. Flexible standing/sitting computer devices are an option to stand and work, but if that does not appeal to you, or is not feasible, extended sitting time may be a real threat to your health.

It becomes more of a threat if your posture is bad, and your workspace is not as good as it could be.

Some health researchers are comparing the impact of sitting too much to cigarettes. So what do you do to survive financially and thrive?

How to Sit Better

Here are a few tricks to make sitting work in your favor:

Take a closer look at your schedule – Could you revamp your work flow to break up sitting time with standing phone calls or walk-and-talk meetings? Could you do concentrated work efforts to produce more within a tighter space of time?

Keep moving – While you sit, twitch a little. Shift in your chair, readjust your seating up, down, back and forth. Occasionally go from feet flat on the floor to a tilted seat, forward leg stretch.

Learn some chair exercises – Roll your shoulders up, down and back. Pull your head back making sure it is centered over your spine. Do some abdomen or gluteal tightening.

Take 5-minute breaks every hour – For real, set a timer and then get up and move around. Get water, coffee, stretch a little, or step outside. Your head may clear and your back will thank you.

Get away – Go out for lunch with a longtime buddy, or co-worker friend.  Make sure afternoon and morning breaks happen away from your desk. Go talk to a colleague or move outside and do a short walking meditation.

When you head home, remind yourself to keep on moving, only sitting down for dinner. Try to spend most of the evening moving about, instead of zoning out on the couch.
