6 Life Skills that We All Need
By Sandy Schroeder
Along the way we learn quite a bit about how the world works, but there are some key life skills that we can’t afford to miss. Business Insider rounded up the ones that they see as most crucial. See if you have them and if you agree with the list.
Manage time effectively - Knowing how to allot time to get the most for your effort is tricky. Big projects, ongoing deadlines and routine tasks all compete for our time, and it’s crucial to make it all come out right. Follow your schedule and see if you can trace your most effective time pattern. When you spot it, hang onto it and make the most of it.
Stay up to speed - Wherever you are on the job, do your best to establish a successful pace and maintain it. Your coworkers and boss will appreciate your consistency and depend on it in a crunch.
Don’t underestimate empathy - When you can feel what someone else is feeling you are likely to give them a hand. When you can relate to the thoughts and feeling of your team, you can easily connect with them. If you don’t have empathy you may be on the outside looking in. Business Insider says, “The ability to feel what others feel makes good sales and service people great, and motivates a team to push even harder.”
Know when to ask for help - Most of us try to figure it out on our own, but knowing when you need help can be crucial and beneficial. When you ask for help you avoid getting in too deep, and you validate those around you who really can help. Stay independent, but be honest with yourself when you really could use some help.
Know how to rest well - Too many people skim by by on 5 or 6 hours of sleep at night. Actually knowing how to get the needed 7 to 9 hours rest can be the difference in powering ahead or barely making it as a zombie. Establish the ritual that works for you and use that extra energy to bound ahead.
Learn how to listen - We communicate nonstop every day, but often the messages we send or receive do not really connect because we forget to listen. Check yourself when you are talking with someone. What did they really say? Did you understand it and ask questions? Or did it just blend into all of the other words of the day? Start listening to move faster and connect better.
If you agree that these life skills are essential, make the effort to master them and see what happens next.
