3 Tips for Healthy Family Living

By Genevieve Cunningham

Family life is what keeps you sane and makes you crazy all at the same time.  These are the people who love you all the time and still get on your last nerve. But the truth is that you would likely do anything at all for your family, and keeping them safe and healthy is at the absolute top of your list. But how do we do this? How do we live a healthy family life and encourage every member to get involved? It will take some work, but it’s definitely possible. To get your family moving down a healthier path, take a look at these tips to add to your family life today.

Cook at Home

When you have a bunch of people to cook for, it’s tempting to just go get something from a restaurant and call it a day. It’s just … easier. But it’s not healthier. In fact, most takeout meals will have hundreds of calories more than your normal dinner at home. To keep the family in good health, make cooking at home a regular part of your life. Ask the kids to help, explore new recipes together, and make it an expectation. The more you cook at home, the healthier your meals will be and the more money you’ll save in the long run.

Make Exercise Normal

For some people, exercise is something that happens on special occasions or at certain events. While any exercise is better than none, your family will be healthier if you’re active all the time. Activity and exercise should be a part of your normal life. Join a gym all together as a family. Find some local activities -- fun runs, sports, hiking groups -- and get involved. If exercise is a part of life and an expectation, your family will be active without any thought or effort at all.

Get Out of the House

In today’s world, it’s tempting to sit inside all day. We have so much to distract us. We can lay around and browse the internet, play on our phones, or watch the newest show on Netflix. And once we begin this pattern, it’s really hard to break. If you’ve noticed your family falling into this trap, just start by getting everyone out of the house. Go do something together every day. The more you work to break the indoor inactivity cycle, the more the whole family will adapt to the changes and begin to live a healthier lifestyle.

Family is one of the best and most important parts of life. And because we care about them so much, making health a priority is a no-brainer. Use these tips to get your whole family moving in the right direction. With some consistency and a plan of action, you can turn around the health of everyone and send it in a direction of long-term wellness and happiness for all.
