Herbs and Spices May Boost Your Health

By Tom Herrin

We are all aware that some foods may support good health while others may help to erode it.  There are some good things available for those who are willing to give it a try.  Some of the things that are used to enhance the flavor of foods may also be able to do some things for our health.  In some instances, some things that we may have thought were superstition may actually do quite a bit in terms of providing a real boost.

Ginger Has Been Known for Settling the Stomach

For years, many people have used something containing ginger to help with digestive issues.  According to some studies, one gram of ginger can help to treat nausea.  This includes treatment for the effects of chemotherapy and morning sickness.  When I was a child, it seemed common for people to drink ginger ale for sick stomachs.  Ginger is also known to act as an anti-inflammatory treatment.  It has been indicated that two grams per day showed similar results as aspirin when used in patients who were considered to be at risk of colon cancer.

Garlic Is Used in Many Cultures

When we think of garlic, we may think of some kinds of foods that may be identified with certain groups.  Garlic seems to be used in many pasta dishes as well as some soups, breads, and a pretty good variety of things.  We use it some.  It has shown pretty good results with the cardiovascular system.  It may reduce blood pressure as well as raise good cholesterol and lower bad cholesterol and triglycerides.  Some people have used it to treat illnesses such as colds or similar problems.  For those who may be concerned about the odor, it is available in capsules that purport to be odorless.

Rosemary Is Touted for Helping with Allergies

It may not be something that you are very familiar with, but rosemary apparently has a good record with allergies.  Those of us who live in areas that are prone to problems with this may want to give it a try.  It is believed to relieve congestion as well as interfere with the allergic response to some allergens.  According to one study, it showed significant results.  Since medications do not always seem to do the trick, it may be worth giving them a try.
