3 Tips to Start Sleeping Better Right Away
By Virginia Laird
Getting enough sleep on a routine basis is an issue for millions each year. While there are numerous reasons getting plenty of rest can prove to be a problem, health and wellness experts advise it is something that should be worked through. Research suggests where there is a lack of sleep, there can be increased illness, stress, and health issues. It is recommended that the average adult get at least six hours of sleep each night. For parents of young children, this can be a struggle. Health and wellness experts have offered a list of tips you can try to improve your ability to sleep better, including:
- Make time to exercise
- Establish a bedtime routine
- Avoid drinking caffeine too close to bedtime
Make Time to Exercise
There are many benefits to having exercise as part of your daily routine. One of the best is that exercise can help you sleep better at night. Research suggests that as exercise burns calories it also burns energy which can help the body find a deeper sleep and be more at rest. Health and wellness experts advise that as little as 30 minutes of exercise three to four times each week can help you achieve a better sleep.
Establish a Bedtime
For those who find it difficult to sleep well each night, health and wellness experts advise that having a bedtime can be beneficial. Just as children rest better while on a routine, so does the adult body. Having a routine can allow the body to know when it is time to relax and get some rest. Start now committing to a bedtime and make sure it allows for you to get plenty of sleep. The first few days of this can be a difficult, but in time your body will be ready to sleep at the bedtime you set.
Avoid Drinking Caffeine Too Close to Bedtime
Although you may be one who loves your soda, it is not wise to drink caffeine close to bedtime. Caffeine has been proven to be a stimulant which can prevent the body from being able to rest. Some research suggests that drinking caffeine as many as five hours prior to bedtime can hamper the bodies ability to go to sleep. Rather than reaching for your soda at night, it may be better for you to reach for a sports drink (although it would be hard to avoid the sugar), flavored water, or keep it simple with plain water. Ultimately, plain water is always best.
Give this advice a try and begin getting better sleep right away. You will love how you feel when you have gotten enough rest!
