How Your Sleep Impacts Your Day

By Genevieve Cunningham

Sleep is such a huge part of our lives. We spend a large portion of our lives sleeping, and yet we refuse to give it the attention it deserves. We repeatedly go without adequate rest. We treat it like an award or a sign of success when we're sleep deprived.. Oh, you got five hours of sleep? Well I only got three! But the truth is that sleep is a necessity -- something that we literally can't live without. And the amount and quality of our sleep significantly impacts the rest of our day. If you're ready to get your sleep turned around once and for all, take a look at how sleep impacts your day, followed by some tips to get more every day.

When You Don't Get Enough

When you don't get enough sleep, it's easy to tell. You may feel irritable or angry. You may have sore muscles and tight joints. You may experience headaches. You may not be able to focus. Sound familiar? Unfortunately, many people live in a constant state of sleep deprivation. This means that you may not recognize the ill effects. Pay close attention to your body, and if these kinds of symptoms are present, get ready to make changes.

When Your Sleep is Good

When sleep is good, your body feels good. Aches and pains are lessened. It's easier to pay attention. And perhaps one of the best benefits of all, it's easier to think positively. Good sleep can completely transform your health and your life! Improve your sleep and you'll be making gains in your life all the way around.

Tips for Better Rest

  • Set a bedtime - Bedtimes work. Our bodies like routine. Set a bedtime, stick to it, and the sleep will come.

  • Turn off the TV (and phone) - These are nothing more than distractions. If you want better rest, you need to sleep with fewer distractions. Turning off the electronics is a great start to better sleep.

  • Get comfortable - You can't sleep if you're uncomfortable. Stretch out any aches and pains. Get comfortable pillows and blankets. Turn down the temperature in your room. Get as comfy as possible! With more comfort, your body (hopefully) won't be able to resist rest.

Sleep isn't something to ignore. It's important for your overall wellness, and it significantly impacts your mood and perspective too! Use these tips to get more sleep and watch your body and health improve in a big way.
