Why Cutting Back on Sugar is a Good Idea
By Genevieve Cunningham
For most people, sugar is a huge part of their diet. Sometimes, we eat a lot of sugar and we know it. Other times, we eat a lot of sugar and we don't. The problem is that sugar is in just about everything -- sweets, bread, pasta, various sauces. The good news is that a little bit of sugar won't really cause a problem in your health or your life. But eating too much -- which is probably a smaller amount than you realize -- brings health risks that just aren't worth it. If you have too much of a sweet tooth, take a look at these reasons why cutting back on sugar may be a good idea.
Sugar Leads to Weight Gain
It's been proven time and again that consuming too much sugar leads to weight gain. This can cause weight gain all over, but it especially leads to weight gain around the middle. If you've noticed a bit extra around your tummy area, too much sugar in your diet might be to blame. And correcting the issue may be as simple -- but not easy! -- as cutting the sugar and getting some movement.
Sugar Raises the Risk of Disease
Excessive sugar consumption can raise the risk of various diseases. Besides weight gain, sugar can lead to unstable blood sugar levels -- and for some people diabetes. As your weight increases, your risk for heart disease, blood pressure issues, and other diseases goes up. To lower the risk and keep yourself healthier overall, monitor your sugar consumption -- and subsequently your weight -- to protect yourself long-term.
Sugar is Addictive
Sugar is absolutely addictive. At first, it's just the flavor that we enjoy. As we eat more sugar creates a chemical reaction in the brain and body. Our bodies crave it. We have to eat sugar! Though it's certainly not as serious as an illegal drug addiction or alcohol dependence, sugar addiction leads to a decline in health and it's absolutely a challenge to stop.
Sugar tastes good, which is why we eat so much of it! It satisfies that sweet tooth that pops up from time to time. It makes certain foods more palatable, and we get used to a slight sweetness to everything we eat. But sugar isn't always your friend. Consider cutting back in order to improve your overall health, lose weight, and feel better in your own skin starting now.
