3 Safe Ways to Get a Tan Before Summer

By Genevieve Cunningham

Before summer gets here in full swing, you probably want to accomplish a few things. Maybe you want to drop a few pounds. Maybe you want to find the perfect swimsuit. And maybe, like almost everyone else, you'd really like to get the perfect tan. Unfortunately, we've come to learn that the easiest way to tan -- tanning beds -- is terrible for our skin! So how do we get the perfect glow? To get your skin prepped for summer, take a look at these tips for gaining that summer glow.

Slow Exposure

Slow exposure is tricky. Just because it's slow doesn't mean it's healthy. But if you do it the right way, you'll have your tan without the increased risk of harm. So how? Put on your sunscreen starting now, and then spend some time in the sun. The sun can be good for you in  small amounts, and the short bursts of exposure will still build up on your skin. Will you be a golden goddess? No. But you will have that naturally sun-kissed look because you will, in fact, be naturally sun kissed.

Spray Tans

A spray tan is one of the fastest ways to get a tan. Using a professional's help, you get a dark substance directly sprayed on your skin. Let it dry and then enjoy. Expect a little runoff the next time you shower, and try not to break a sweat for a while. Otherwise, this route is pretty simple. Any drawbacks? Make sure your helper is a true professional so you don't end up with stripes or an infamous Trump inspired orange glow. This route also wears off in about a week, so the endeavor can be pricey over time.

Lotions

Perhaps one of the best options in today's world is a lotion that builds over time. Check out a makeup store or salon to find a tinted moisturizer. You'll need a glove and some patience, but that's about it. Over the course of a few days, you'll cover your whole body in the lotion. The tan will slowly develop. As long as you keep applying, you should be able to keep your healthy glow. Just make sure to follow the directions explicitly, and don't go too dark without a little experimentation first.

It's possible to safely get a beautiful tan for summer without risking the health of your skin. Take a look at these options and see which works best for you. Just make sure that whatever you do, you always cover your skin in sunscreen before heading outdoors, and that you always moisturize at night. Protect your skin, build your tan slowly, and keep a beautiful glow for years to come.
