3 Ways to Brighten a Bad Mood

By Genevieve Cunningham

Bad moods are common. Everyone experiences a dip in moods from time to time. For the most part, these moods don't really affect us. We wait for them to pass, and then we get on with our lives. But sometimes, we need to rid ourselves of a bad mood, and we need to do it now. What can we do? If you need help getting rid of a bad mood sooner rather than later, take a look at these three tips to get you moving in the right direction.

Get Some Music Going

Music is so powerful. It can transform a mood faster than almost anything else. It has a way of reaching the emotions and altering your current state. If you're feeling particularly low, put on some music that makes you feel good. Though you can choose whatever kind of music you like, research suggests that music with an upbeat tempo or music that is relaxing is the best for fighting bad moods. If you're really feeling bad, try busting a move to really turn that mood around.

Go for a Walk

Exercise is a great way to boost moods. When your body is engaged in exercise, your brain doesn't have the energy to focus on mental stress. So what happens? You release that stress until a later time. And the less stress that you feel, the better mood you're going to be in. If you want to make your exercise even more effective, go for a gentle walk outdoors. Getting outside is an additional way to boost your mood and can make the effects of exercise even more powerful.

Go See Some Friends

Friends can really change your perspective, and when you're in a bad mood, that's just what you need to happen. If you're feeling low, ask some friends to meet with you. Laugh, talk, and get in some big smiles. Your friends can help you see the fun side of life, and meeting with them regularly might help you maintain better moods day in and day out.

Bad moods definitely happen, and that's OK. But you don't have to -- nor should you! -- live in a nonstop bad mood. Use these tips to eliminate the bad mood, improve your overall feeling, and enjoy a little more of your regular life every day.
