Mental Health Crisis: Are You at Risk?

By Genevieve Cunningham

Mental health is a serious issue. Years ago, we gave very little thought to mental wellness. Of course, we also lived in a much different world. Today, mental health has taken a much needed turn at the forefront of our minds. It's a growing problem, and it needs attention and solutions. But even with the increased exposure, many still don't personalize it. They believe that mental health problems are something that everyone else suffers. But the truth is that so many of us are at risk! If you aren't handling your mental health on purpose, take a look at these risk factors and some tips for getting on track.

Risk Factors

Though anyone can suffer from a dip in mental health, there are a few risk factors that seem to increase the odds:

  • Excessive stress - If you're constantly under stress, you're much more likely to suffer a mental downfall. This includes stress over work, family, and even home life.

  • Excessive social media use - Social media has been proven to be bad for mental health over and over again. It's the constant comparison. The need to fit in. Luckily cutting back may be a big help.

  • Financial strains - Finances are a big worry for a lot of people. If you spend a lot of time stressing over finances, you may be setting yourself up for trouble with your mental health. This one is a tough one to break, but cutting back and downsizing may help.

Tips for Improving Mental Health

Whether you're at risk or not, it's still important to care for your mental health. To get started, take a look at these tips:

  • Slow down - Life is not a race. Slow down and enjoy yourself. Do things that are fun. Say no to being busy all the time. This can significantly lower stress and leave you more mentally stable.

  • Face-to-face contact - Online contacts are great. It allows us to be in contact with people all around the world. But we still need to see people face-to-face. We need the connection. Make sure you're getting plenty of face-to-face friends and family time, and you'll be much better off.

  • Professional help - It's never a bad idea to reach out for professional help. A counselor or therapist can help you work through your problems and give you advice for coping on a daily basis.

Your mental health is one of the most important parts of living a healthy and happy life. Don't ignore it! If you are at risk, pay special attention. If you're not at risk, you should still pay attention and take action when necessary. Put yourself and your mental wellness first so that you can enjoy your life now and long into the future.
