The Keys to Quitting Your Worst Habits

By Genevieve Cunningham

There isn’t a person on the planet who doesn’t have a few bad habits. We all have something that we do that we wish we didn’t. Maybe you’re a smoker or a heavy drinker. Maybe your habits are less damaging, like knuckle cracking or hair twirling. Whatever your bad habits are, they’re always tough to break. But in some cases, breaking bad habits is crucial to maintaining long-term health. If you need a little help quitting your worst habits, take a look at these important tips.

Let It Be Known

We’re a lot more likely to stick with something when we make it known that we’re doing it. Trying to quit smoking? Telling people will have you watching your back every time you think of grabbing a cigarette. If you’re not quite ready to go public with the world, tell just a handful of trustworthy people that you can count on to keep you motivated and moving in the right direction.

Be Slow and Steady

Even if you have 10 bad habits, you shouldn’t try and quit them all at once. Remember that slow and steady wins the race, and this is definitely true for breaking habits. Just choose one habit. Perhaps start with the one you're most ready to be done with. Focus on quitting this one habit, and when you have it down, then you can try another. Overwhelming yourself too quickly will only be setting yourself up for defeat and disappointment.

Identify and Avoid Triggers

One of the best methods to breaking bad habits is to figure out what triggers the urge to do it. Do you eat your weight in sweets every time you procrastinate? Stop procrastinating. Do you reach for a soda every time you go into the break room? Avoid the break room. And if you can’t avoid situations, then find an alternative. Reach for a cigarette every time you’re stressed? Try gum instead. Once you find and avoid the triggers, quitting the habit is that much easier.

Quitting bad habits can be hard, but with a little planning, it gets a lot easier. Use these tips to help you break even the worst of your habits. With some perseverance and patience, you’ll kick those habits to the curb and be leading a healthier lifestyle before you know it.
