5 Tips for Going Through the Fast Food Line

By Brandi Goodman

It's common for people to want to hit the fast food line when there's limited time or energy to cook a meal at home. Doing so is fine on occasion, but you need to keep a few tips in mind so you can make healthier and more worthwhile choices. Don't hit the fast food line until you realize just how to make more beneficial selections for your brain and body.

Ask for a Burger With No Bun

The bun of the burger adds far more calories and carbs to the meal than you need. Ask for a burger with no bun instead. You'll get the meat and all the toppings without all the fattening bread. It's an easy way to keep your calorie count low.

Pick the Salad

Most fast food chains have some sort of salad option. Whether it's a side salad or a full meal's worth, it's one of the best choices you can select. Just be sure you're skipping the calorie-high dressing, or at least selecting a version that is light.

Opt for the Fish

If there's a fish sandwich on the menu, opt for that instead of a burger or even a chicken sandwich. Fish is typically the healthier choice, brimming with omega-3 fatty acids that are necessary for good brain health. A fish filet or something similar should be the choice over beef.

Make Water Your Beverage of Choice

Soda pop, slushies, ice cream drinks, and more make up many fast food menus. While these may be tempting, they really shouldn't be ordered except for once in a great while. Make water your beverage of choice instead. It ensures you aren't drinking your calories, and you're able to wash down your meal with something beneficial for your body instead of more sugar.

Find a Healthier Fast Food Restaurant

If you know that the place you're visiting only has basic burgers and fries on the menu, you may want to opt for a new location. Find healthier fast food places with chicken wraps, baked potatoes, various salad choices, and other nutritional alternatives. Wendy's and Subway are two options readily available across the states.

It's fine to get fast food whenever you're in a hurry. You just need to make healthier selections while you're there so it doesn't completely wreck your diet for the day. Don't grab the biggest burger you can find or pig out on multiple menu selections. Order something light and nutritious so your body can benefit from the meal.
