Afterschool Snacks That Are Healthy and Delicious

By Genevieve Cunningham

If you have kids, then you know that they are eating machines. It seems as though as soon as you feed them, they're already asking for something else to eat. This isn't really a problem unless you’re constantly feeding them unhealthy junk food. Perhaps one of the toughest times to make sure your kids are getting a healthy snack is right after school. You're busy, and so you reach for anything. If you want to keep your kids eating a good diet, take a look at these healthy afterschool snacks to put in the menu.

Apples and Peanut Butter

This snack is easy and fun. Just slice an apple, put a dollop of peanut or almond butter on the plate, and let your kids dip their apple slices. Your kids will get blasts of protein, healthy fats, fiber, and Vitamin C. But perhaps best of all, they’ll enjoy the process of eating something that's actually good for them.

Yogurt

Yogurt is one of the easiest, lowest effort options for your kids. You can choose regular yogurt, or you can opt for the healthier Greek variety. Depending on which kind of yogurt you choose, you may be giving your children healthy sources of calcium, Vitamin C, protein, and healthy cultures for the gut. If you’re worried about sugar, buy a low sugar or sugar-free option, and let your kids dig in.

Popcorn

Popcorn has a negative stigma, but it's not all bad. This delicious snack contains massive amounts of fiber and is very low calorie. It's also fun, as your kids can plop down with a bowl in front of their favorite show. The key? You can't make the greasy, butter covered microwave kind. Instead, you'll need to use a skillet on the stove or use an air popper in order to keep this snack healthy.

It can be tough to keep kids eating a healthy diet. They're kids, and they like what they like. But you can definitely make healthy eating happen. It might take a little planning and creativity, but it will be well worth it for your kids’ health as well as their palate. Use these afterschool snacks to get you started, and you’ll have a healthy menu for your kids in no time at all.
