The Health Pros and Woes of Using the Phone

By Genevieve Cunningham

The phone. Though we love plenty of modern inventions and conveniences, there may not be one with a bigger impact on our world than the phone. Truly, instant communication can be a great thing. We can get in touch with almost anybody at almost anytime. And while this certainly makes a positive impact on our lives, it can also bring some negatives. To better understand the pros and cons of phone use on our health and well-being, take a look at this quick guide.

The Pros

There are plenty of good, healthy reasons to use the phone. A few might include:

  • Fitness apps - If you need help with your health, you can download numerous apps on your phone. Apps to help you count calories. Apps to track exercise. If you need a helping hand in creating a healthy lifestyle, your phone might actually provide some good.

  • Reminders - We have a million things to do and not enough brain space to remember it all. But the phone can provide you with helpful reminders to get things done, and this can lower stress levels and anxiety.

  • Contact - The phone allows us to contact anyone we need. Doctors, fitness professionals, dietitians. Anyone who can provide you with health assistance can likely be reached with a text or phone call.

The Woes

Though the phone brings plenty of good, it can bring a bit of bad, too. Some of the negative side effects might include:

  • Inactivity - The phone, because of texting and the internet and games, can keep us inactive. And ongoing inactivity is definitely detrimental to our overall well-being.

  • Comparisons - Blogs, Instagram, Facebook … all of these mediums can provide motivation. But they can also cause us to make unhealthy comparisons. These comparisons, these moments of feeling not good enough, can harm mental health and cause a decline in motivation.

  • Distraction - Instead of working out, you’re texting your friend or checking Instagram. Don’t let the phone distract you from your goals or keep you from reaching your full potential.

The phone can be a positive influence in our health and our lives … as long as we use it responsibly. Use your phone as it was intended and don’t fall into any of these traps. If you do it right, your phone can make your health, perspective, and life better than ever.
