How to Save Money While Eating Healthy

By Sara Butler

Most people think that to eat healthily you have to buy expensive ingredients. That couldn’t be further from the truth! But saving money while eating healthy isn’t just about what you buy, it’s about the strategy you use when you’re shopping. Here are some healthy tips to help you shop smart on a budget.

Don’t Shop Hungry

The worst thing you can do is walk into a grocery store starving – because then everything will look good. If you don’t have any choice but to go to the store before you’ve eaten, buy a fresh piece of fruit or some nuts to munch on as you shop. Then it won’t be as big of a code red situation and you’ll leave the store with the things you really need, budget in tact!

Plan Ahead

It’s so important to plan your meals out before you go shopping. That way, you can check things off your list and buy only those things. It helps to reduce temptation (cookies on sale!) and also will help you to stay healthy throughout the week. It also helps to reduce waste, since you won’t be pitching things you didn’t get around to eating before they spoil.

Go Generic

There’s nothing wrong with generic brand food since they’re usually just as good as the name brand but less expensive. You can find generics for nearly everything, so be on the lookout for them to help keep you on a budget!

Shop By Yourself

It’s not always possible to ditch the family or the roommate and go shopping, but when you can do it you should go for it. This way, you can focus on really looking at the food you’re buying, study labels, and take your time. Plus, no one will tempt you to buy things not on your list!

Buy Whole Foods

Processed, pre-packaged food may be a time-saver, but it’s also a health-buster! It doesn’t always save you money, either – have you been to the bulk aisle lately? Quite often, the less processed a food, the cheaper it is per serving. When looking at food, consider the original, whole food it’s made from. Chances are you can buy the ingredients separately and make your own dish that is healthier and less expensive!

Eating healthy doesn't have to break the bank. Save money and eat well by employing these strategies!
