Don't Ignore These Foods in Your Diet

By Sara Butler

There are some foods that are a no-brainer to avoid. Candy, cookies, cakes -- they're all something you should only have in moderation. People avoid foods in their diets for a variety of reasons but most of the time it's because they think food will have a negative impact on their health and wellness. The problem is, many foods that have been labeled as unhealthy over the years are actually good for you. Here are some foods you shouldn't avoid as a part of your healthy and balanced diet.

Potatoes

Potatoes are very healthy. One medium potato with skin is only 110 calories. And while they may be carbohydrates, which is why most people tend to avoid them, they're complex carbohydrates -- which are the kind you should be eating. They also are full of protein, fiber, Vitamin C, and potassium.

Your brain needs complex carbohydrates to function properly. As long as you avoid potatoes that have been deep fried or are swimming in sour cream and butter, potatoes are a healthy food. Bake potatoes and add some spices for flavor.

Eggs

Eggs got a bad reputation due to the cholesterol they contain, but it's since been discovered that the cholesterol in eggs doesn't have a negative impact on your blood cholesterol levels (unless you eat a dozen each day, every day). For healthy people, eating eggs in moderation is not associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease.

Eggs happen to be a great source of protein. With only about 70 calories per egg, they provide 13 essential vitamins and minerals your body needs. They're also full of antioxidants that help to keep your cells healthy, and unsaturated fats that help your body to absorb all the nutrients.

Bananas

Bananas are a great snack when you're on the go, but some people avoid them because of the sugar they contain. Keep in mind that when it comes to bananas, it's all about controlling your portions. A medium banana has about 100 calories and 14 grams of sugar. But it also has 3 grams of fiber, potassium, Vitamin B6, and Vitamin C. Choose smaller bananas to help keep your portions under control but feel free to enjoy this portable snack that fits perfectly in your hand.

No matter what you've heard before, do some research to make sure a food you're avoiding isn't actually good for you. After all, new information is constantly available, especially when it comes to nutrition.
