Broken Resolutions? Good for You!
By Sara Butler
New Year's was a few months ago now -- how are your resolutions going? If you've already broken your resolutions, don't sweat it. At The Joint Chiropractic, we hope you won't give up on your health and wellness goals completely just because you've slipped up. In fact, breaking those resolutions might be a good thing for your long-term success. Here are a few reasons why a bump in the road (and the breaking of resolutions) can actually help you to get where you're going.
You're Not Perfect
One of the best things you can do for yourself is to abandon the idea you must be perfect. You're a work in progress, after all, so it's important not to beat yourself up when things don't go the way you want them to.
Some research suggests that people who expect perfection from themselves are often the worst when it comes to achieving goals set. That's why exercising forgiveness for skipping your workout or eating that basket of chicken wings is important. Don't worry about overindulging or missing a workout. Brush yourself off, get back on the health and fitness saddle, and keep on going.
Savor Your Accomplishments
Resolutions are good because they push you outside of your comfort zone, that's why it's important to look at any progress you make moving forward in pursuit of a goal a good thing -- even if you fall down along the way. If you didn't struggle reaching goals you've set yourself that push you to be better and be healthier, then it wouldn't be a resolution in the first place, it would simply be something you're already doing. So yeah, resolutions are tough but you're making positive changes and that's what is important.
You're Willing to Change
You may have trouble honoring the resolutions you made a few months back but taking a step back to reassess your desire to change can help you reconnect with the part of you that was willing to make the resolution in the first place. Why did you want to pursue that goal? If you stop and remind yourself why, it can help you to make your commitment even more solid. Embrace your stumble and recommit yourself to jumping back on the bandwagon to achieve your desired outcome.
You Believe in Fresh Starts
The one good things about messing up? It gives you a chance to start fresh. As long as you learn from the mistakes you've made along the way and move on from them quickly, then you're on a good path. After all, learning is what the journey to achieving your goal is really all about.
When it comes to resolutions, there's a bigger picture you need to be aware of. Don't get down simply because you've not stayed on track. Instead, learn from your missteps and you may find a brighter future!
