Taking Time Off Is Good for Your Health

By Paul Rothbart

Taking time off work from time to time is a good way to recharge your batteries and destress. Unfortunately, many people refrain from using their vacation and personal days for a variety of reasons. It's a disturbing trend in the nation. Some employees feel that taking time off shows a lack of commitment to the company and its goals, making them less likely to get raises or promotions. Some people worry about getting so far behind that they will never be able to catch up when they return to work. Whatever the reason, never taking a day off is a bad idea. Time away from work is not just relaxing. It's good for your health.

Mental Health

Most jobs have a level of stress, some a lot of stress. By constantly working and never taking time off, the anxiety builds to unhealthy levels. Burnout is common as is depression. Taking a vacation at least once a year and the occasional mental health day gets your mind off of work for a while. It lets you reset your mental state and focus on other equally important aspects of your life. It helps to put things in perspective.

You Can Reconnect With Loved Ones

Constantly working can make you so tired and stressed, you don't spend quality time with your significant other, children, and other loved ones. Good relationships are essential to health and happiness. By taking time off once in a while, you can plan a fun, relaxing day with the people that you really care about. Reconnecting recharges your body and spirit and can give you a boost when you do return to work.

It Can Help You Find Yourself

Many people identify themselves merely as their occupation. For example, I am a writer. But I'm also a husband, a father, a son, and a brother. I'm an animal lover, a film buff, and an amateur jazz musician. I don't get paid for those things, but they are every bit a part of me. Taking time off lets you catch up with hobbies and other activities, reminding you of other parts of your identity. It's an important part of a healthy life and an excellent reason to use those vacation days.

You'll Return to Work Ready to Go

When your respite is finished, you will feel refreshed and ready to take on any challenge. You can hit the ground running when you go back to work. It's a good way to continue to be productive throughout your career.

It can be hard to walk away from work for any length of time. There seems to be a never-ending task list. However, your health will be boosted by taking time off periodically. Everything will still be there when you get back.
