3 Tips for Managing Daily Anxiety

By Genevieve Cunningham

Most people will suffer from anxiety at one point or another. There are plenty of things and situations in life that will make us anxious. For the most part, it's not really a problem to feel anxious. But when anxiety is a constant in your life, you may need to learn some coping skills so that you can enjoy life. To get a handle on daily anxiety, take a look at these tips to put into your normal routine to help you feel calm and centered.

Stay Active

If you're feeling anxious, being sedentary is your worst enemy. It gives you too much time to think and worry. Don’t settle on the couch and watch hours of television. Don't spend all of your time on a computer screen. The best thing that you can do is stay active and involved. Get into an exercise you like, find an organization to join, volunteer, meet face-to-face with friends, get outside. The more regular activity you get, the easier it is to keep anxiety at bay.

Improve Your Sleep

A lack of sleep can make anxiety so much worse. You just don't have the mental clarity to deal. And that nagging feeling of exhaustion can bring on anxiety all on its own. If you’re not not getting enough rest, it's time to focus on this part of your health. Set a bedtime, get a good wind down routine, turn off the lights, and make your space comfortable. Getting adequate sleep may stop a lot of anxiety, or at least make it easier to deal with regularly.

Avoid Triggers

Most anxiety has some sort of trigger. Sometimes we don't know the trigger, but if you can pinpoint it, you’ll be a little ahead of the game. Maybe you get anxious when you think about your kids’ safety. Maybe you experience anxiety when you visit a particular place or spend time with a particular person. If at all possible, avoid these triggers. Though it may not prevent all forms of anxiety from popping up and invading your life, it's a great start to feeling more relaxed and centered on a daily basis.

Anxiety is one of the worst feelings. It's not just inconvenient, but it can be downright debilitating. It's persistent and frustrating and all consuming. Use these tips to help you manage stubborn anxiety in your everyday life, and you may find that a happier and more productive life is just around the corner.
