Can Heavy Workouts Cause Back Pain?

By Tom Herrin

A lot of us are into exercise.  It can keep us better able to do a lot of the everyday tasks we have.  There are all kinds of workout routines that may be focused on various parts of our bodies and various needs.  Most of the time, they are great and make us feel good afterward.  At times, however, we can do more harm than good.  What we thought should be wonderful, and keep us in top shape, can actually cause pain.  If you have back pain after going through your exercise routine, a visit to a chiropractor may get you back on track.

The Back Needs Some Care

Even the best intended workout can backfire on us.  While we are likely trying to strengthen our muscles, we may end up causing them to be strained.  Heavy lifting, or excessive repetitions, can strain the muscles that support the spine.  If this happens, they may fail to do their job, and a joint dysfunction may occur in which pressure is placed on a nerve causing pain.  It can become severe with little reprieve.  Pain medication may only serve as a bandage.  Each successive workout may only do more harm.  You may find yourself walking the floor in search of some kind of rest.

Chiropractors Can Make a Difference

When you go to a chiropractor with back pain, you will be given an adjustment in which the spine will be gently manipulated so that the injured joint is restored to its best position.  This can take the pressure off of the nerve and relieve the pain.  Since it is all done naturally, no pain medication is used.  There is no risk of addiction or side effects.  Healing may be much faster and a return to work may occur sooner.  The chiropractor may suggest some exercises that may help to strengthen the muscles that support the injured joint and also suggest what exercises should be avoided.
