4 Healthy Camping Hacks
By Brandi Goodman
Camping is a favorite summer and fall activity for many. It isn't always the healthiest though, depending on how you're handling the outdoor vacation. With some healthy camping hacks in mind, you can make the most of your camping excursion and return much more well-rested and feeling great.
Make a S'more Using a Banana
S'mores are a common campfire tradition, but they aren't the healthiest choice when it comes to snack time. Instead of using graham crackers, full pieces of chocolate, and large-sized marshmallows, you can opt for a banana version instead. With the peel still intact, slice open a banana vertically. Add in some chocolate chips and mini marshmallows before wrapping it with tin foil. Skewer the foiled banana or simply place it on a pan to heat up over the fire. You'll have a unique version of s'mores that is far healthier to eat.
Purchase a Portable Water Purifier
Water should be the drink of choice no matter where you're located. When camping, it may be difficult to find a healthy source of water. You can bring water bottles along, but there may be no place to fill them. If that's the case, make sure you purchase a portable water purifier so you can purify water from a stream or faucet found near your campsite. You can also boil the water over the fire to help eliminate toxins and bacteria.
Use a Foam Pad for Sleeping
If you don't have the money to spend on a cot or air mattress, you should bring a foam pad at the very least for sleeping. A sleeping bag on the hard ground will not work well for most adults. You'll end up waking in pain -- if you even manage to get to sleep at all. A foam pad is inexpensive and at least offers some cushion and support for your body.
Wear Athletic Shoes
Walking the trails, heading from your campsite to other areas of the campground, playing games, and much more physical activity tend to be common while camping. You're not going to want to wear flats or sandals in this environment. Athletic shoes are necessary to prevent pain in your feet and legs and keep the insects from biting and leaving your feet constantly itchy.
Healthy camping is possible if you keep some tips in mind. You always want to lead a healthy lifestyle, no matter where you're at and whether you're on vacation or not. Your well-being is always important.
