Plant the Seeds for a Healthy Diet
By Sara Butler
Seeds are good for you. They're full of nutrients and good fats. They're also a great source of fiber, Vitamin E, selenium, iron, zinc, and protein. They're pretty much the perfect snack or complement to a meal. You should enjoy seeds in moderation, of course, but understand how adding different seeds to your diet can boost your health and nutrition.
The Most Common Seeds
There are several types of seeds that are easy to find in your local store. These include:
- Hemp seeds - These seeds have a nutty flavor and don't worry; they have no THC so you're not breaking any laws by enjoying them.
- Flaxseed - It's been discovered that humans have been enjoying flaxseed for thousands of years and they have a ton of health benefits. Just make sure they're ground before you eat them so your body can absorb all their nutrients.
- Squash and pumpkin seeds - The chewy texture and nutty flavor of these seeds makes them an excellent snack all year long, not just around Halloween.
- Sesame seeds - You might be more familiar with these as decoration for a hamburger bun, but they're also great sprinkled on salads, stir fries, and on top of steamed vegetables.
- Sunflower seeds - Probably one of the most popular seeds, sunflower seeds make a tasty addition to stuffing, baked goods, granola, trail mix and a baseball game.
How to Choose and Store
Most seeds can be found in sealed jars or in the bulk section of your favorite market. Just understand that because these seeds are so high in fat, they must be stored properly to avoid spoilage. Make sure to store them in a bag or sealed container in a dark, dry, and cool place. You can also keep them in the refrigerator or freezer for several months to keep them fresh.
How to Enjoy Them
You'll get the most flavor from seeds if they're toasted lightly in the oven. All you have to do is toast them in a single layer in a pan over low heat for a couple of minutes. You can add a little extra flavor by adding some garlic powder, chili powder, sea salt, soy sauce, or dry salad dressing mix to them, then roasting them.
Seeds can be a nutritious part of your healthy eating plan, so learn how to incorporate them into a healthy diet!
