Foods to Take On Your Next Road Trip
By Sara Butler
Everyone loves a good road trip. Well, most people do. What's not to like about an adventure on the open road, the wind blowing through your hair, and new sights all around you. And snacks -- because no road trip would be complete without copious snacks to take along.
When it comes to road trip snacking, it's important to focus on health. Heavily processed snacks with a lot of fat and sugar will leave you feeling tired and distracted. If you focus on snacks that can help to improve your concentration and focus, then your road trip can take on a whole new life.
Here are a few suggestions for healthy snacks that don't sacrifice flavor to take along on your next road trip.
Trail Mixes
Trail mixes can be very unhealthy, which is why you should focus on making your own. Mix your favorite nuts with dried fruits (and forget the chocolate candy). You can also mix in some whole grains such as oatmeal clusters sweetened with honey if you need something that's a little bit sweet.
Another whole grain snack mix idea is to use popcorn. You can combine popped popcorn with freeze-dried fruits and some nuts of your choice. This mix is full of fiber and antioxidants to help sustain you over the miles.
Ants on a Log
If your kids are going to tag along, then you may want to make up some ants on a log. That's celery topped with peanut butter and raisins. They're crunchy and satisfying with a dose of healthy fats and protein.
Peanut Butter Wraps
One thing that is a must when it comes to road trip food is the ease of handling. You can't devour something messy in the car. Well, you could, but it would probably make mom upset.
For an easy handheld sandwich, take a whole grain tortilla and fill it with nut butter. If you want a little crunch, add some granola drizzle with a bit of honey. It will fill you up and keep you going until you get to your destination.
What About Buying Snacks?
Sometimes you may have no choice but to buy some snacks once you're on the road. Don't worry, you can easily find healthy things out there, too. Look for:
- Nuts
- Fresh fruit
- Yogurt
- Protein bars
- Jerky
