How to Keep Your Exercise Routine Fresh

By Karen Heslop

Even if you love exercise and appreciate its many benefits, doing the same routine repeatedly can get stale. So how do you keep fit without getting bored? Here are just a few things that can make a significant difference.

Try Something New

Most people find an exercise activity that works for them and stick to it. Doing that can ensure that the work gets done but it's also a recipe for boredom. Why not try out other exercise programs to see what you've been missing? Many instructors offer online classes or videos so explore the different types of yoga, boot camp classes, Pilates, and more.

Add Some Fun

There's no reason your workout has to be done in complete silence. Turn on some music and use the beats to guide your movements. For even more fun, how about doing a special routine during the chorus or seeing if you can hold a squat through the song's bridge?

Dance, Dance, Dance

You don't need to be a professional to burn calories from dancing. With this option, you can either join a dance class or do it your way. All that's needed is some good music you can move to. Dancing for even 10 minutes can work up a sweat without feeling like a workout.

Do Your Own Thing

Whether or not you call it exercise, all you have to do is move. That means it doesn't even have to be a set routine. Do some squats while vacuuming. Jog in place while washing the dishes. It's even better to take the focus off working out altogether so how about going outside to play with the dogs or your kids?

Switch the Focus

If you usually take a walk as part of your exercise routine, your focus will be on that. How about planning a fun activity at the end? Take a hike to enjoy the view at the top or go learn to fly a kite.

Why Changing Things up Helps

The benefits changing up your exercise routine go further than keeping the boredom at bay. When you do the same exercises all the time, your body adapts and the activities become less effective. By interrupting the schedule with new exercises, your body has different challenges to deal with. That disruption can give your routine the jolt it needs to get closer to your goals.

There's no doubt that exercise is important to everyone's overall health and wellbeing. That doesn't mean you have to stick to the same old routine. Try mixing it up and you might just be surprised by the results.
