Perfection Isn't Required for Optimal Health

I know several people who want to get in better shape, but who keep coming up with excuses as to why they are dragging their feet.

“My knee hasn’t gone back to being pre-injury perfect, so I’m going to wait until it feels better.”

“The timing isn’t perfect because I just started a new job and want to get settled in a routine.”

“I know what I like and still need to find a gym that is perfect for me.”

Perfect. Perfection. Those two words can lead to a tremendous amount of promise, but they can also lead to a tremendous amount of paralysis at the same time, can’t they?

Take That Step

Just in case you didn’t get the memo, perfection isn’t required to get started on a new fitness routine. There is very little in life that can be deemed perfect anyway, so let’s throw away that word and take that first step toward optimal health. Here are some ideas on how to begin.

  • Schedule exercise and healthy eating - If you struggle with finding the time to do what is necessary, a calendar can quickly become your best friend. Schedule time to exercise, grocery shop, and meal plan. If you don’t have huge blocks of time to dig into, then schedule smaller amounts throughout your day. Fifteen minutes here and 20 minutes there can easily add up to a significant amount of time for exercise if you let it.
  • Keep at it, even on “blah” days - Motivation and confidence are fickle little fellows, aren’t they? It’s important to be aware of that and to be prepared for the days when they just don’t show up (because there will be some), but it’s also important to keep at it. So if you’ve had a bad day or are feeling run-down, keep your plans for your workout, but give yourself some wiggle room to go easy.
  • Take ownership - A healthy diet and exercise routine are critical for optimal health, but everyone has “one of those days” where slip-ups occur. If that happens, take ownership, be honest with yourself about what happened, and try harder the next day. Just don’t give up.
  • Slow down - Intense workouts, restrictive eating, little downtime … sure, that may work for super-athletes, but for someone with a family, career, and Little League games to get to on the weekend, it may not be the perfect solution. So slow down! Be patient. And focus on showing up every day and making small changes consistently. That’s where the magic will happen.
